One of 101 titles in the St. Joseph Picture Book Series, this book by popular author Father Lovasik S.V.D., provides children with an explanation of America's first Saint and an extraordinary woman. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton was an amazing woman who made history as the first American-born saint in the Catholic Church. She was born in New York City on August 28, 1774. Elizabeth grew up in a wealthy family, but her life changed a lot as she grew older. When she was 19, she married a man named William Seton, and together they had five children. Elizabeth was a devoted mother and loved helping others, especially the poor and sick.

But life wasn't always easy for her. William became very sick, and the family traveled to Italy to try to help him get better. Sadly, he passed away there, leaving Elizabeth a widow with five young children. While in Italy, Elizabeth learned about the Catholic faith from friends who were caring for her. She was inspired by their kindness and the beauty of their faith. When she returned to the United States, she decided to become Catholic, even though it wasn't easy, and some people were not happy with her choice.

Elizabeth went on to do something amazing: she started the first free Catholic school in the United States in Emmitsburg, Maryland, where she taught children from all kinds of backgrounds. She believed that education was important for everyone, especially girls and those who couldn't afford it. Elizabeth also founded the Sisters of Charity, a group of religious women dedicated to helping others, especially in education and caring for the sick.
Elizabeth's deep faith, kindness, and commitment to helping others made her a role model. She died on January 4, 1821, and many people still look up to her today. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton's life teaches us to be strong, caring, and to help others, even when life is hard. She was made a saint in 1975, and her story continues to inspire people around the world.
